New Research Intern at Right to Rise!

Right to Rise is excited to welcome Channa van Laake as their new research intern! Channa is a student in the Master's programme 'Social Challenges, Policies and Interventions' at Utrecht University. She will work on various projects, including a project connected to her Master's thesis studying the link between a mother’s level of education and the likelihood of her daughter(s) to undergo Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting. She will also provide assistance to a project evaluation of an NGO in the Netherlands focusing on harmful practices among migrant communities.

Supervising the Amsterdam International Law Clinic Student Team

In December 2021, I received and e-mail from the director of the Amsterdam Law Clinics with the request if I would be willing (and available) to supervise a group of Master students of the University of Amsterdam who enrolled in the Amsterdam International Law Clinic. This is a unique opportunity for students to work on real legal cases and/or projects for a client during a semester. I am very enthusiastic about this programme and I therefore immediately said "yes"!

Teaching the course 'Gender, Human Security and Violent Conflict'

From September until December 2022, I am teaching the course 'Gender, Human Security and Violent Conflict' at the University of Amsterdam. How are violent conflict and security gendered and what are the consequences and implications? These are the central questions discussed in my course from the perspective of conflict studies, human security theory, international relations and gender studies.

Guest Lecture about FGM/C in Groningen

The 4th of October 2022, we gave a guest lecture about Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze Hogeschool) in Groningen. More than 30 students with different backgrounds, including nursing, physiotherapy, social studies, health care studies and applied psychology, attended our lecture.

Graduation Ceremony PPLE 2022

The 18th of July 2022, the Graduation Ceremony took place of PPLE. In the beautiful Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, more than 160 students graduated from the multidisciplinary bachelor programme combining Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics of the University of Amsterdam.

Supervising 12 students with their bachelor thesis at UvA

From March until August 2020, I supervised 12 students with their Bachelor Thesis at the University of Amsterdam. Because of Covid-19, this year’s supervision process was different compared to previous years, as the supervision was all those months online.

Teaching the course ‘Public International Law’ at UvA online

For the fourth year in a row, I had the honor to teach the course 'Public International Law' at the University of Amsterdam. Due to Covid-19, we switched to online teaching and the whole course was taught online from my office at home.

Guest lecture about FGM/C at Hanzehogeschool

Together with my friend and colleague Istahil Abdulahi, an amazing women and survivor of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting, I gave a guest lecture for students at Hanzehogeschool Groningen.

Guest lecture 'Law and Culture' at Leiden University

The 27th of February 2020, I gave a lecture at Leiden University. The title of my lecture was ‘The role of law in ending Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in the African context.’ I was invited by Annelien Bouland, the coordinator of the course Law & Culture, which is part of the minor Law, Culture and Development.

Teaching the course 'History of Legal Theory' at UvA

From September until October 2019, I taught the course ‘History of Legal Theory’ at PPLE College at the University of Amsterdam, together with colleagues prof. Marc de Wilde, Robbert Weaver and Robbie Voss. It is a second-year course in the Bachelor Programme Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE).
